8th Northern European Conference on Travel Medicine (NECTM8)
Welcome message from the chair of the NECTM8 Local Scientific Committee
Before the Christmas holidays will commence, I would like to inform you that from June 3-5, 2020, the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands will host the 8th ‘Northern European Conference on Travel Medicine’, or NECTM8 in short, in the conference center De Doelen.
Facilitating for the multifaceted interests and needs regarding up-to-date, state-of-the-art prevention, diagnosis and treatment of travel medicine and adjacent fields and for the first time enfolding in three parallel session tracks, the conference aims to attract professionals from all travel-medicine-related trades, namely nurses, general practitioners and medical specialists as well as students and trainees with a particular interest in the field.
The motto chosen ‘Setting sail towards the future of travel medicine’ encompasses two aspirations of the conference: There will be a strong local flavour capitalising on the host city’s prominent position as major harbour and hub of trading and travel, spanning from history to the future; as well as that the conference will be a forum to discuss the future of travel medicine itself, as it is shaped by the quest for sustainability, societal and environmental changes, and an ever-evolving emergence of infectious and non-infectious disease challenges.
Aiming to cater for the various interest groups’ educational needs, there will be a broad mixture of offerings ranging from keynote lectures on hot topics, industry-sponsored sessions, overview symposia presenting state-of-the-art knowledge in the field, as well as a broad range of workshops, poster sessions, and free communication sessions to engage the lively and multifaceted travel medicine community.
Whilst the programme anticipates upon the diverse information needs of students and experienced professionals as well as for hospital clinicians, general practitioners, nurses, as well as public health experts, it aims at making offerings appealing to people beyond their own field of expertise. Collaboration sessions organized with the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) and an integrated afternoon focusing on the immune-compromised travellers highlight networking activities across groups and interests.
As an example, keynote speakers on the opening day will include Professor Lin Chen (ISTM President) on the future of travel medicine, Professors Patricia Schlagenhauf and Professor Annelies Wilder-Smith on state-of-the-art overviews on malaria and arboviral diseases, as well as an overview on Rotterdam’s harbour, history and health. The scientific programme will be flanked by opportunities to socialize and meet in an exciting environment, including a conference dinner boat cruise.
Happy holidays and I hope to see you all in Rotterdam!
Prof. Dr. Martin P. Grobusch
